33rd Annual Meeting

of the

OWSLEY FAMILY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Meet us in Macon!  Ride the OFHS trolley Friday evening to a wine and cheese garden party before supper in the parlor at historic Sidney Lanier Cottage.  After dinner Marty Willets will tell us about southern poet Sidney Lanier's life in the Civil War and Macon history. Then we board our trolley for a tour of lighted historical Macon after dark.

Our annual meeting in this beautiful old southern city begins Thursday, June 2nd, with early registration at 3 P.M. at our hotel, the Holiday Inn, Macon North. That evening is our traditional Thursday night dessert social.  Bring photos, memorabilia and tall tales.

Friday morning is the Business Meeting--followed by Floyd Owsley on our family in the Civil War in Georgia and an introduction to the noted Genealogy and History Collection of the Washington Memorial Library.  It's strong in English, Scots, Irish, and Welsh records plus those of the original thirteen colonies. Visit www.co.bibb.ga.us/library.  To search the catalog, go to www.bibblib.org (Bibb County library database). On left in small print, click on "Pines Catalog" which will lead you to the genealogy collection.

Then it's OFHS luncheon at our hotel.  After lunch, some will want to do genealogical research at the Washington.  For those who prefer sight-seeing, Macon has antebellum houses like the fabulous Hay House and an abundance of museums from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame (Otis Redding, Ray Charles, etc.) to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.  Request free visitor's brochure at www.visitmacon.org or (800) 768-3401.  Friday evening is optional trolley tour, garden party and supper at Sidney Lanier Cottage.

Saturday morning features those cousins with roots in or who live in Georgia, Alabama, or Florida.  President Ronny Bodine will tell us about Newdigate and Weldon Owsley, sons of Thomas Owsley II and his wife Ann (Hudson) Owsley who migrated from the family plantation in Virginia to Georgia.  Then descendants of the brothers will share what happened to those in their lines down to the present.  Cousins who live in Georgia, Alabama and Florida who are not from Newdigate nor Weldon can share how their family came to be in those states--more details when we receive your registration form.

Milancie Hill Adams will tell us about Henrietta Leonora Owsley, who moved to Fort Lauderdale and show photos of Henrietta's father's, Dr. Frederick Owsley's mansion which is a 7/8 reproduction of the White House.  After lunch on our own with cousins and friends, we will carpool to the Ocmulgee National Monument. It's one of only four elaborate Indian mound complexes in the country.  We can enter the earth lodge, climb the temple mound--or tour by car.  We'll visit the museum which covers 12,000 years of American history and view a 17 minute video.  No admission fee.

We conclude with our Saturday evening banquet at the hotel.  Then it's farewell 'til 2012.
